This is so much fun and the camera on this is AMAZING!! A little
difficult to fly for the novice R/C helicopter fan, but fun once you get
the hang of it. If you haven't flown a R/C heli before, I wouldn't
attempt this one as you will most likely break it. I only gave it 3
stars for durability, but if you are careful flying it, you shouldn't
have too many problems. You can also order spare parts, although not
cheap. We were amazed at the quality of the camera and everyone in my
family wants one now. It will only fly for about 7 minutes on the
battery, but that hasn't stopped us from thoroughly enjoying this toy.
I got this helicopter on sale post Christmas for $75 + SH.
For 80+
dollars this toy is a lot of fun. It is way larger than what I expected.
I was originally going to purchase the LT7112 which is cheaper and
meant to fly indoors but my daughter really liked the led lights on the
711 videos and since the 711 was on sale the price difference was only
10$. This is a large helicopter and although some of the utube videos we
saw were done indoors I don't see how any sane person can fly this
indoors at least not while learning to fly it.
It requires no
assembly and it is pretty much ready to fly as soon as you charge the
battery. The instructions are short and graphic and get the job done but
are clearly translated awkwardly. They are easy to figure out though.
The fact that they are written probably by someone in China makes one
take the warnings about the battery exploding while charging seriously
so I charge it away from anything remotely flammable and don't leave it
charging unattended. I don't think the charger is a smart charger so you
probably don't want to leave it charging more than an 1-2 hours.
Once
charged the thing flew great. We were pretty cautious and only flew it a
few feet of the ground until we get a hand of it. I did not want my
daughter to see her helicopter blown in the wind 50ft above ground as is
shown in one of the utube videos. On a nice day you can probably fly it
above your house easily and take some nice video. The video camera
works perfectly well and takes nice images.
The remote control is a
bit low quality. Especially the throttle control is kind of shaky and it
is easy to turn the propellers off which promptly results in a rapid
drop. But over all the helicopter is easy to fly. The charge lasts for
about 10 minutes. Once the charge is close to over it has the problem
that the rotor intermittently shuts off in midair so you probably don't
want to fly at high altitude more than 3-5 minutes and then stick to a
few feet above ground. I think the led lights flash with a different
pattern (blinking red) when the battery power is close to finish but
this is nowhere explained in the manual so don't take my word for it.
I
can't wait to become confident with this thing and fly it at night in a
clear field. With the LED lighting it looks really cool.
So far it
has gracefully resisted the crashes we have had (about 5 feet to the
ground) with no damage. It's solidly built of aluminum tubing so it
seems like it can take a beating. Much more fun than a lot of RC planes.
In
summary this helicopter is great for its price. Even at >100$ it is
worth it and it will be a lot of fun. The gyro makes it very easy to
fly. My 8yo daughter was flying it solo after a couple of trials; now
she is trying to see if the helicopter can take Barbie for a ride. Thus
is a DANGEROUS as the propellers can hit you quite hard; definitively
not good for an unsupervised kid <14.
I was surprised how many
crashes it survived intact before needing repair; after one of the
crashes it stopped flying. I was also surprised that it is relatively
easy to repair.
The frame of the helicoper is very durable. The
blades don't break easily either. The main thing that breaks are the
gears. Fortunately you can get replacement gears for 7$ at
KopterKrazy.com. The gears brake when you crash without turning the
throttle off. In an impending crash the first action should be to shut
of the power. The body seems to survive most crashes but if the motor is
still running when the propellers hit the ground the teeth in the small
plastic gears inside break. You will know they are broken because the
helicopter will make an awful rattling sound and though the propellers
turn it won't take off. Replacing the gears was not that complicated.
Just took off all the screws and disassemble the helicoper, changed the
gears and then put it all back together. Take a picture of each screw
noting where it goes otherwise putting it back together will be a
nightmare. Also take a picture of the way the gears are connected before
taking them off so that you remember how they were put together in the
first place. It looks like you can get all the replacement parts online
so you are looking at about 10-20$ cost after every severe crash. I
would recommend getting at least a set of the small gears when you
purchase the helicopter that way you will be able to repair it quicker.
My daughter had fun helping me fix the helicopter and she was amazed by
the gears inside.
After tearing a second set of gears I got a
training landing gear online and hopefully with this the crashes will be
less bad. The training landing gear are four long carbon fiber rods
with pingpong balls at the end and they make it harder for the
helicopter to tip over when crashing. This should protect the blades and
the gears when crashing.
Although the helicopter has the gyro it
still takes practice to fly. DEFINITIVELY do not fly it when there is
wind outside. If the trees are moving it is too much wind. Also this
thing is too big to fly indoors except for a gym.
KopterKrazy has
some wise flying tips. I wish I had read their tips before. When
learning to fly you probably want to sit on the ground about 5 ft from
the heli. Give it throttle slowly until it barely takes off; if it spins
use the trim control below the right joystick to control the spinning.
Once it is not spinning give it throttle a bit more to keep it at eye
level and then learn to control it at this height. Once confident move
to control it at eye level standing. I found that the heli given full
throttle will gain height very fast and it may get beyond the range of
the remote. I ended up having to rescue it from the roof.
Another
problem my helicopter had was that it wanted to go backwards all the
time so to stay still you had to turn the tilting propeller all the
time. The fix for this problem is adding a little weight to the front.
If
you want a much more reliable product get the parrot AR drone; it will
cost you 100$-150$ more. You fly it with an ipad or ipod but it is so
easy to fly that it is almost boring. The live camera feed is very cool.
If you count all the count the replacement parts and the time fixing
the LT-711 after five to ten crashes you might as well have gotten the
parrot drone.
